Membership in the Bahamas Society of Engineers opens the door to a world of opportunities. The BSE meets the third week of every month. This meeting is generally announced to the membership in advance. Please contact the office for more information. The meetings provide a mutually beneficial environment for both the student looking for a mentor and for the Professional Engineer looking for a way to give back to the community.

Indeed, the role of the BSE is increasingly important since the passage of the Engineers Act in 2004. The BSE recognizes the importance of providing technical advice in policy decisions by the government, and in supporting persons who may requiring assistance in achieving registration. the BSE therefore as a learned society provides inter alia, the following benefits to our members:

  • A means for engineers to network through regular monthly meetings in order to increase the awareness of engineers about current issues through well-informed and industry distinguished luncheon speakers as well as through interesting field trips;
  • Increased opportunities to foster cooperation between engineers in various disciplines, between engineers and allied professionals, and the public;
  • Lobby to bring to the forefront the concerns of the profession, and more specifically to increase the awareness of the need for registration of engineers and the continuous regulation of the Engineering Profession,
  • Making available locally, reliable avenues for professional development
  • The Provision of Training and Development Opportunities
  • The promotion of the highest professional standards possible
  • Facilitation of Employment Opportunities
  • Establishment and Management of a Talent Bank
  • Reduced cost to BSE events
  • Recognition through the biennial BSE Awards Banquet
  • Establishment of a Virtual Library

Membership exists in BSE at many levels

Student

BSE is dedicated to assisting students from the high school to University level in achieving their goal of becoming a Professional Engineer, and more importantly to encourage students who never considered a career in the sciences to do so. Our participation over the years in careers day is a testament to our dedication to development of the youth. Student membership exists for those at the College level who are enrolled in a program that will lead them to a degree in engineering. Dues- $10 annually

Affiliate

Engineers work closely with persons in the allied areas such as Architects, Building Surveyors and Quantity Surveyors for example. In some cases we depend on some of our Affiliates to execute many of our well laid out plans, some of these persons would include electricians, welders, air-conditioning mechanics and draftsmen. These persons would all find a place in BSE. Our role would be to see to the further development of the skill level in these areas with the ultimate goal of fostering more understanding among the various groups and better industry coordination. Dues- $50 annually

Associate

Associates are persons who would have already achieved a recognized degree in engineering but who would have had less than four years practice upon graduation. Our goal is to assist such persons in their overall professional development by providing opportunities for young engineers to meet and eventually understudy more seasoned professionals. Further, by networking with other young professionals in the field a, support base is established for the formation of study groups for the preparation for examinations and interviews to meet the requirements for international registration. Dues- $75 annually

Members

Members of the Society (MBSE) are persons with a recognized degree in engineering that would have been practicing in the field for four years or more. Members are also persons who though may not possess an engineering degree, but who through their years of training and experience would qualify under the proposed bill to be called an engineer. Dues- $100 annually

Fellows

These are individuals who possess ten years of continuous membership in the BSE and have distinguished themselves in the field of engineering. Dues- $100 annually. Mr. Colin Marshall is a Fellow of the Society, (FBSE).

Honourary Members

The BSE has over the years have sought to recognize persons who are retired from the field of engineering but during their time of active service distinguished themselves in the field. To be considered, honorees do not necessarily need to be members of BSE. Once honored, these persons receive lifetime membership in the Society. To date we have recognized Eng. Calvin Cooper, Eng. Ivern Davis, Eng. Peter I. Bethel, Eng. John Steer, Eng. Peter Gordon (deceased), Eng. Harold Munnings, Eng. Carver Grant Sr., Eng. Roger Johnson and Eng. Thomas Mabon.
